Fish the corner
After no racing for three days due to grey skies blocking out the thermals and not a ripple of gradient breeze, undisclosed sources inform us that the only ‘reel’ competition going on is fishing.
Sports psychologists are extremely worried about the effects the delay in racing will have on the race crews. So much so that they have decided to encourage the teams to take up fishing.

Simon Fisher representing the Victory Challenge Angling Team is currently top dog with a rod having netted this beauty with the assistance of Neal MacDonald.
The becalmed conditions and the fishy revelations in the press have led to a surge of fishing professionals heading out to Valencia; we spoke to Valencian local fishing expert, Copilto Pescadore (CP) about the new trend in VLC.
“I can confirm that some teams are in full force out there on the race course, I have been on hand for some expert advice. Things are hotting up today as we are using bait for the first time and have also expanded our collection of lures. This is the first time we have seen fish in these numbers in 137 years and the shops are running out of fishing tackle.
I saw the fish that the Swedish man caught, it was a Greater Amberjack. Its Latin name is Seriola Dumerili and it is often served lightly fried (about two minutes in oil) with garlic and onions.”
On a note about nutrition; If certain criteria are met then experts would say it is highly suitable for the diet of an America’s Cup navigator;
Fish is an excellent source of protein and is high in fatty acids such as omega 3. Garlic is a natural source of anti-coagulates and is very good for warding off vampires. The onions are a valuable source of natural sugars and if eaten with potatoes then you have a good source of carbohydrate and vitamin C. All in all, we are looking at a good all round meal suitable for the mental concentration required for navigating an AC boat or for fishing from the weather RIB. If this diet was sustained then we are looking at raising the concentration levels by as much as 0.3%.
Neither the Greater Amberjack or Simon Fisher was available for comment but it is believed that the fish will be eaten tonight after a toxicology report.

Bob Fisher is in Valencia covering the America’s Cup for the umpteenth time. Now what Bob doesn’t know about the America’s Cup is not really worth knowing but we thought we would see what he knows about using a rod and line…
Do you like to fish?
Absolutely,my favourite spot these days is from the pontoon at the Royal Lymington.
But it was a remarkable guy that taught me all about fishing; Basil Steady, his Smack, some buttered dabs for breakfast and a refreshing beverage off Brightlingsea.
What is the big difference between deep sea fishing and fishing close to shore?
The amount of water under your keel. Personally, I prefer my fishing, sitting on the dock with a cold beer.
What do you think about when you are fishing?
Almost everything else except fishing, it’s about letting your mind wander and letting yourself hang loose and going home refreshed with an empty keep-net.
Seychelles fisherman or sea-trawler captain, which life would you choose and why?
Definitely a Seychelles fisherman; trawlers go out in appalling weather, the Seychelles fisherman enjoys brilliant sunshine.
Can you explain ‘trout tickling’?
Not when my wife is in ear-shot!
Are there any fishing-transmitted diseases? Can you catch something?
No and fish, in that order.
Night fishing; lurking around marinas. Does using a torch constitute outside assistance?
Definitely, unless the torch is used to assist tying on a hook, which is very difficult to do in the dark.
What about power assisted reels, should they be legalised?
Definitely not, they are not necessary and give nothing to the sport.
How does a little fish survive shark infested waters?
By keeping a bloody good look out!
